I got this handsome hardcover, inscribed by the author to a previous owner, at a local Savers thrift shop. Set in South Carolina in 1855, it uses elements from Celtic mythology to weave a tale about a young girl who wants to escape her planned marriage to an older man from her Irish Traveller clan. She finds friends in the human world, but also among the strange fairy-folk of the Carolina forests - but can they protect her when her erstwhile husband, a violent and dangerous man, comes in search of her?

There are lovely little illustrations, and thematic icons created by the author using Celtic symbols - overall, a very handsome book. The story itself is often frightening, but the elements of friendship and magic work well.

I left this book in the Little Free Library; hope someone enjoys it!
